PrimaLuna Evo 100
Why is Prima Luna different?
Prima Luna is at the origin of numerous technological innovations in a redefinition of the tube amplifier, from improving the reliability and lifespan of the tubes, to a unique sound signature .
Listening to or buying tube electronics is a process that is most often based on a compromise. The choice is assumed but the user knows what he gains and what he loses in comparison with other technologies. When an audiophile aims for mono or single ended triode electronics, he knows the inherent limitations such as low power, reduced bandwidth, high distortion, heat dissipation, optimal tube life. Obviously, to a lesser extent the choice of tube electronics operating in ultra linear mode (non-triode) presents the same limitations. The choice of tube electronics is therefore dictated by the type of restitution expected, a warm restitution, rich in material and density accompanied by second harmonic distortions rather pleasant to the ear.
One-of-a-kind PrimaLuna
Created in 2003 in the Netherlands by Herman van den Dungen, PrimaLuna quickly built a global reputation for its tube amplifiers with exceptional value for money.
Designed in a classic spirit, they offer unparalleled sound. No unnecessary complications in a PrimaLuna, just musicality and ease of use thanks in particular to its Adaptive AutoBias reducing distortion. The assembly of the paired tubes is not essential when replacing them.
The Prologue and Dialogue ranges are equipped with the legendary EL 34 lamps but are also compatible with the more powerful KT88 thanks to a switch. Praised by European and American critics, such as the renowned magazine The Absolute Sound which awarded 7 âEditor's Choice Awardsâ to PrimaLuna, an unprecedented number.
Toroid Power Transformer
Power transformers generate two types of noise, magnetic and acoustic. This is why toroidal power transformers are used in the best audio products. Compared to standard transformers, toroids emit about 1/10 of the magnetic field that pollutes music and obscures details. Additionally, the lack of an air gap typically means that the toroids have an 8:1 reduction in acoustic noise. As transformers are the most expensive components of any audio product, manufacturers will even house cheaper C-core and EI-core transformers in an outboard power box with an umbilical cable rather than upgrading to an expensive toroid . The increase in cost is significant, but PrimaLuna doesn't cut corners. All PrimaLuna products use massive toroidal pot transformers.
Point-to-point cabling
You invest in interconnections. So why does the signal go straight from RCA jacks or speaker terminals to circuit boards with copper traces so thin you can barely see them.
PrimaLuna uses point-to-point cabling on all of its products. The entire signal path, including resistors and capacitors, is painstakingly hand-wired by an expert technician with heavy gauge cable.
Tube indicator
The engineers at PrimaLuna wanted to make owning a tube amp so simple that you would have no excuse not to realize your tube dreams.
If a tube fails, Adaptive AutoBias will instantly put the amplifier into protection mode so no parts can be damaged. A red LED will light up in front of the tube to be replaced. (ProLogue Classic lights an LED on the front panel.) Simply plug in another tube and listen.
Extended life
PrimaLuna operates its output tubes with minimal dissipation without entering into cross-distortion. When you look at our amps, they deliver less power to each tube. With the KT-120 as an example, a PrimaLuna will only give you 21W per tube. So running a pair of these you get 42 watts. That's a lot of power, but the demands per tube are only a fraction of some manufacturers who give you 100W from a pair of KT-120s. It's a cheap way to get big power, and it's cheap. Getting more power the right way is expensive. This requires larger transformers, taps, wiring, resistors, capacitors, and tubes to do so. This is exactly what PrimaLuna did.
